Zsíros kényér (“ZHEE-ROWSH KEN-YEHR”), literally “fatty bread,” enjoys two main variants within Hungarian cuisine. The first is a slice of bread spread with zsír, while the second is a by-product of szalonnasütés where the drops of hot fat are collected on a slice of bread. Both versions then add red onions, paprika or salt and black pepper to taste.
