Vintage Sausages Seized in Police Raid in Pest

green-virsli.jpgMore than three tons of spoiled meat were seized by food inspectors Thursday morning at the Lehel téri piac (Lehel tér food market). According to rtlklub.hu, six food-sellers at the large District XIII bazaar were fined a total of over Ft 5 million (€19,000) for “deceiving” customers. Among the assorted horrors were hot dogs (virsli) with expiry dates as far back as January 2006. Woof!

All of the meat was frozen. “Some of these products were in such a state that, if they were thawed out, they would have let out a horrible stench,” said one of the food cops. As for what will become of the rancid hús, it will be destroyed, and the peddlers it was seized from will have to pay for that as well.
