Tokaj Almost as Exciting a Tourist Destination as… Detroit

Okay, so we were trying to ignore this, but since several readers have sent it in, here we go: according to a “best of” piece published in the travel section of the New York Times last month, the famed Hungarian wine region of Tokaj is one of the “The 53 places to go in 2008.” That’s the good news. The bad news is that Hungary’s one must-see destination on the list comes in next to last, at #52, behind (to quote one reader) such hot spots as Iran, Namibia and Detroit. On the other hand, it’s an honor, as they say, just to be nominated. Plus, there also might be some good news in the fact that you can probably drive out anytime this year for a tipple of tokaji and not be overrun by pushy New Yorkers bitching that the wine is sweet and sort of brown.

On one hand this might draw enough international publicity that
would add to the recent domestic publicity and actually prevent
the incinerator plant ruining one of Hungary’s golden assets…
However if the demand rises, and the production is still 8,000 little
bottles every year – *oh noooo!* – maybe we should buy liquid
gold instead of the real stuff ;) Here’s a question puzzling me
recently – anyone know of any shops to get small production/select
    Tokaji in Bp besides btsaság/monarchia?!

Try Terroir Club, http://www.terroirclub.hu. They are in Buda, not far from the Tinto Fino and Culinaris shop region.
