Hungarians Eat Fewer Sweets than Other Europeans, But All At Once

bittersweet-taste.jpg

Via fogyasztok.hu comes news of an interesting survey recently conducted by Hungary’s Association of Sweets Producers, which reveals that Hungarians much less in the way of sweets than the average European. According to the study, Magyars consume four kilograms of sugary treats per year, just more than half as much as the average of seven. What’s interesting is that much of this consumption takes place in a very short period of time around the winter holidays, when the country wolfs down more than 800 tons of chocolate Santas and 5,500 tons of szaloncukor, or almost one pound per set of supposedly non-sweet-toothed Hungarian. So maybe all those ads for Hungarian dentistry aren’t aimed at the British after all…

  1. Stacey says:

Actually this habit is better for the teeth. It is the frequency of sugary intake and not the amount that leads to tooth decay.

  2. TDS says:

The problem with szaloncukor is that there are so many different types and they’re all so addictive!
I’m not surprised that most magyars pig out on them over Christmas… although I’ve already started :-)

This is what I usually gorge on over Xmas. http://www.chew.hu/bejgli.html

Hmmm, yummy. Best Hungo dessert ever.
