You know that horrible story about the person who misses a plane which then goes on to crash, only to get in a fatal car accident on the way home from the airport? Well, never mind, because we have it beat for tragic irony – at least if you’re a pig.
The story begins with last weekend’s Miskolci Tél Kocsonya Fesztivál, an annual Woodstock-like fiesta dedicated to kocsonya, i.e. jellied pigs’ feet. While we didn’t make it to the event, it seems like we were the only pig-lovers in Hungary who didn’t, with 150,000 turning out over the three-day festival to eat Lord Knows how many pairs of jellied trotters.
But just as pigs throughout the country may have been snorting a sigh of relief that they had escaped the fate of their swine sisters and brothers in Miskolc, news came of a truck accident near Szeged resulting in the deaths of at least 100 pigs. Meanwhile, just in case you are wondering, the “survivors” of the Szeged accident in the above pic are being hosed down by firefighters in an effort to cool (and, we assume, calm) them down, or otherwise to save their bacon.
