So Much Better to Savor Your Fánk With A Fork

It’s hard to find a person who doesn’t love the occasional donut (a.k.a. “doughnut”). But even diligent ignorers of health guidelines in donut-loving countries around the world sometimes find it hard to scarf down this glorious marriage of batter and hot oil without wondering if it’s really worth all those calories and “bad” cholesterols. Thankfully, Hungary has a solution to this increasingly troubling problem: eating your donuts with a knife and fork, like a proper dessert.

This seemingly-obvious but widely-overlooked breakthrough came to us a few days back at Kádár Étkezde, when we were tempted by a (daily) offering of fánk barackos lekvárral (donuts with apricot puree, Ft 440/€1.60).

Rather than wolfing down our double D’s in a few quick bites and then begging God for forgiveness, we lovingly savored the two fat-rich pillows, daubing each deadly bite with a bit of the healthful fruit mash they sat on (rather than being injected with). By the time we were halfway through the second, we were already 110% sated, rather than hungrily trying to guess how many we had left by the grease patterns on the bag. Then again, if you are pressed for time and don’t really care about enjoying your own demise, we’re sure you can get them to wrap up a few for take-away.
