The word saláta (“SHA-LAT-TA”) can mean several things in Hungarian.
Often used as shorthand for fejes saláta (Butterhead/Boston Lettuce, the most common variety of lettuce grown and eaten in Hungary) it is also used to describe “salads” composed of other lettuces, mayonnaise-laden vegetables mixes, or one or more forms of savanyúság (pickled vegetables), such as csalamádé.
Meanwhile, if one orders a vegyes (mixed) saláta in an upscale restaurant in Hungary, the waiter will probably assume the patron is requesting a salad of leafy greens, though it may also include one or more varieties of savanyúság as well.
