From our foreign desk comes an interesting story that you might want to keep in mind for the next time someone in Hungary bitches about high food prices. According to an article in the Romanian daily Romania Libera summarized on origo.hu, an increasing number of románok are crossing the border to go food shopping in Hungary.

The piece says that residents of Romania's Arad County tend to cross the border to shop in Makó, Szeged or Békéscsaba, and mostly visit the outlets of large hypermarkets like Cora and Tesco. One shopper told the paper that their family saved around €100 in one trip by buying food in Hungary and not at home. Oddly, according to the report, even such staples as eggs, kalács (bread), butter and margarine are half as expensive in Hungary as right across the border.
