Restaurant Finds Worst Adjective For Advertising Fish Soup

finom-halaszle.jpg

According to this sign we received via our tip jar, the day’s special is “damn tasty” halászlé, which is what the word kurva more or less translates to in this context. But considering how the word by itself means “whore”, we’re not sure if they could have really used a worse adjective for something with a fish essence.

  1. Akos says:

It is a bit too informal, but it has nothing to do with the word whore when it is translated to English. “A fucking good fish soup” is better. :)

  2. Mr. Language Person says:

    “kurwa” is the Polish spelling.
    It’s “kurva” in Hungarian.

    Kurva meleg van ma…

    (It’s fucking hot today…)

  3. Loretta says:

    What about spaghetti puttanesca then?
Fishy anchovy sauce to go with the ‘whore’ name

  4. Erik says:

    @Loretta: Good one! I can’t believe I didn’t come up
with that, because puttanesca is one of my
    favorites. :)

  5. Andrea says:

As italian I can tell you that the word “puttanesca” is not a bad word. it’s only the name of the dish, without any other meaning. Belong to a “bad word”, of course. but is not a bad word.

  6. Mr. Potato Head says:

    The bad word is spaghetti.
Can’t wait for the next pasta famine.
It may help Italians recognize potatoes as the most important food group.

  7. kispangit says:

    Ez kurwa jó!

  8. Vándorló says:

@Loretta and Erik: How about mixing pasta from the central region with the southern sauce; in place of spaghetti: ‘Strozzapreti alla Puttanesca’ (“priest strangler with whore sauce”)?
