Protestors Expected to Call Foul as Hungerit Reopens Foie Gras Facilities

kacsamaj.jpgA company producing fattened goose and duck product in southeastern Hungary (among them foie gras) has restarted operations after being pressured to close by animal rights group the Four Paws Foundation in September, reports vallalkozoinegyed.hu. Szentes-based Hungerit, which laid off almost 200 employees after originally ceasing its goose liver production facilities, said that 80% of their former clients expressed interest in resuming the purchase of their products. A resolution passed by parliament at the end of last year stated that products from fattened geese and ducks can be sold as long as labels are attached that they derive from force-fed animals, thus opening the possibility for Hungerit to resume production. Hungarian foie-gras is a highly sought after delicacy around the world, especially in western Europe.

Sad piece of news. I would rather see development of non force fed products and work on EU level to stop French etc force fed products from market. The future hopefully will be to differentiate in export market by having high quality ethically acceptable products, especially organic food, ala Austria etc.

Absolutely good news!

1. Scientist state that force-feeding goose and duck is not as bad for them as for other animals.

2. Hundreds of job are now saved, in an area of Hungary which desperately struggles with unemployment. Those who choose to encourage these pressure groups also choose to drive people into hopeless poverty in that Hungarian region.
