Hungary’s appetite for food festivals knows no limits as this weekend sees two more high-calorie events for lovers of local specialties. The southern town of Szeged is preparing for its first ever Kocsonya Festival in honor of jellied pigs’ feet on Mars tér on the weekend. Meanwhile, a day-long carnival and winter-ending festival focused on the considerably more photogenic fánk (pictured left, Hungary’s and apparently Slovakia’s take on the common donut) will be held in the village of Pilisszentkereszt 26 kilometers north of Budapest in the scenic Pilis hills, on Saturday.
Kocsonya Festival organizer Ildikó Pál explained to stop.hu that while the festival was named after kocsonya, it will also feature other pork and cabbage dishes, savanyúság (pickled vegetables), kolbász (spicy sausage), jam, szörp (drinks made from fruit syrup and water) and “healing breads.” For dessert, visitors can enjoy kürtőskalács and dried fruits, as well as the obligatory mulled wine and pálinka to keep the cold at bay. Music will be provided by local bands, and children will be entertained at a playhouse.
The fánk festival, organized by the Pilisszentkereszt Slovak government, was held for the first time last year, writes stop.hu. The Slovak government – 42% of the village’s 2100 inhabitants are of Slovak origin and Pilisszentkereszt also has a much shorter Slovak name, Mlynky – would like to start a tradition with the festival and teach visitors about the customs of ethnic minorities living in the country, said Mrs. Tamás Demjén, chairwoman of the government. The event will be held at the Slovak elementary school and will feature fánk eating and fánk cooking competitions, stage performances and lots of programs for children. And once visitors have had their fill of fánk, the surrounding area offers great hiking opportunities.
