A seemingly simple sortie along the M1/M7 motorway to the edge of town and Club 66 resulted in spectacular and humiliating defeat in the increasingly desperate Budapest Burgerwar™. The reasonably stylish and surprisingly full restaurant modelled on the great American traditions of Harley-Davidson motorcycles (the restaurant is above the Harley showroom), low lighting and, er, romance, not only failed to live up to America’s formidable culinary reputation, it did not even offer up anything even resembling a burger. Homesick Americans are advised to stay well away, although the faux-Americana certainly is popular with a local lunchtime crowd clearly not in any kind of rush. Anyway, giving the turkey wrapped in bacon with prunes and Roquefort sauce a miss for once, we opted for the most Yank-friendly item on the menu – the chicken fajitas.
The dish itself fell down not so much for its taste as for its ill-considered delivery. Once we had got over the use of zucchini and egg plant in the meat and kidney beans rather than black beans in the sauce, the flavors actually came together quite nicely. And although there was ample filling and sauce, we only received two tortillas, which left a whole lot of fajita and sauce left to fend for itself. We would have ordered more and risked getting barked at, but the service was characteristically slovenly, so we made do with what we had. For Ft 3,250 (€13.80), that is pretty much unacceptable.
OK, I am probably being a little harsh on Club 66, there are worse places to eat in terms of food, value, ambiance and service in Budapest. At the same time, if you are a motorcycle gang just rolling into town from the wilds of Balaton, or just a hungry American in search of nostalgia fix, this experience will have you reaching for the nearest pool cue.
