New M. Menu Offers Venison Stew, Stewing Vegetarians

vegetarians-please-specify.jpg

People are always asking why we are fans of M. (link to previous stories), Budapest's crazy-aunt-in-the-attic Hungarian/International bistro. Here's yet another reason: on the current menu, the mains are led off by a "vegetarian surprise," and no matter how much you beg the staff to tell you what it is, they won't tell you. And this being crazy old M., it could really be anything, from an asparagus soufflé to a baked eggplant stuffed with an asparagus soufflé to a boiled calf's head stuffed with a pork knuckle (see, we told you you'd be surprised!) Meanwhile, if you're not in the mood for surprises, or vegetables, we'd recommend the whole-baked camembert (Ft 800), the fried goose liver with Marsala sauce (Ft 1,600) or the Burgundy-style venison stew with polenta (Ft 2,500), all of which were, unsurprisingly, excellent.

This place is great! As a veggie myself, I ordered the veggie surprise, and I was told if they told me what was in it then I couldn't order it anymore.
However the chef let me tell him what I didn't want in it, so you can be sure that whatever you get won't happen to be made of something you hate.

You mean it's the "Helen Thomas" Hungarian/International bistro?

having a hard time locating a website for M. anyone that can help?

cheers, and looking forward to eating in BP!

There really is quite an atmosphere in this restaurant. We have only been there once, but it was a great experience. The chef came up to the table next to us and said "I need to know who ordered the vegetarian suprise, because I don't want it to be a bad surpriiizee" He said this with such cute accent that I had to laugh out loud. Then he discussed with them what they didn't want in it. Food was great, too!
