Melegszendvics (“MEH-LEG-SEND-VITCH”) is generally considered to be something of a pub staple in Hungary for those bars that don’t have a kitchen. The name means “hot sandwich,” and not “gay sandwich,” as the name for the sandwich predates the acceptance of “meleg” as the politically correct term for homosexual. While there are variations on melegszendvics, the most common involves a thick slice of bread or half a roll spread with meat paste, topped with cheese, and then usually ketchup. More refined variants substitute meat paste with actual slices of salami or ham, but the cheese and ketchup are standard.
