Low-Cost Lidl Lamb Chops Win Big Prize for Summer Grill Surprise
September may be just around the corner, but there's still plenty of Hungarian summer left to savor. And what better way to do it than with a little grilling? While there hasn't been much grill news around this summer, we did recently stumble on a rather choice BBQ tip. Over the past few weeks, the Lidl supermarket we frequent has been steadily marking down packages of lamb loin chops from New Zealand. The pics above are from last weekend, during which we scored an armload of the 350 gram, six-chop packets, for the very reasonable price of Ft 800 (€3) each. (At around Ft 2,300 per well-trimmed kilo they are significantly cheaper than anything comparable we've found in Budapest.) Of course, they are frozen rather than fresh. Still, everyone was very happy with the result, with one exception. Fire in the hole!

Which Lidl supermarket do we frequent?
Eric, you need only to walk around the corner to Belgrad Rakpart to the Halal butcher next door to Capella and buy FRESH chops for 1800 huf per each delicious kilo. Plus, no need to wait for the frozen Lidl chops to come to the end of their freezer life and be discounted. Also no need to thaw the fresh ones and they are available all year round at this price. Enjoy.
Absolutely agree - if my memory serves me correctly, I last saw
lamb chops in a butcher for around 5,500Ft/Kg, and they were too

Doh! The butcher of Belgrad Rakpart has gone home to Libya for 3 weeks. I did not stock up on lamb.
@david: What about the butcher of Magyar utca (near Kalvin ter)? I know he's a Turk rather than an Arab, and probably more expensive, but still, a nicely comprehensive selection of barany bits.
