Last Call for Food-Lover-Lovers' Big Night
With just hours remaining until the big event, we have a pair of late additions to Monday's rundown of Valentin Nap specials being offered by some of our 33 favorite restaurants in Budapest. Maybe we're just in the mood, but these two menus are so enticing that, even if you don't have a date for tonight, it might pay to just grab some bum off the street.
Baraka: The Big B's nine-course VD menu is so extravagant you'll never need to prove your love in any other way to whomever is lucky enough to be your partner. It starts with an amuse bouche of mascarpone cheese foam with caramelized figs and fresh lemon zest, then springs a marinated scallop with toasted pistachio nuts and truffle oil. After that comes a Thai coconut shrimp soup, a goose-liver "Ganache" with forest-fruit balsamic reduction and fresh strawberries, a pan-seared strawberry grouper filet with saffron-potato puree, sugar snap peas and a champagne sabayon. Then there is a little break, in the form of a carrot parfait, with candied ginger and carrot "powder." Next comes a cashew-date crusted loin of venison, with Jerusalem artichoke puree and fava beans, a "pre-dessert," and finally (drum roll!) pâte à choux with strawberry chutney on a chocolate sponge, served with a passionfruit-coconut reduction. The price, which includes a jazz quartet, is Ft 17,000 per head, which strikes us as a serious bargain, considering that just reading the menu makes us feel like a cigarette and a bit of post-VD cuddling.
Fausto's: While not as baroque as Baraka's, our favorite high-end Italian eatery's VD entry is equally alluring, due to its exclusive focus on hart-to-get-in-BP-seafood items. It starts, intriguingly, with two soups: one of scampi and arugula, and the other of potato, lobster and cream. Then comes seabass and celery-filled ravioli, and, for the main event, monkfish with sweet pepper and truffle cream. It ends up with a ricotta and mango heart cake, and costs Ft 14,000 a head.
