We’re going to be publishing some seriously meaty restaurant news regarding the Kempinski Hotel Corvinus Budapest within the next day or so. But as an appetizer, we are going to serve up a quick item about some interesting treats being offered by Budapest’s original post-1990 five-star hotel. First, until this Sunday the 24th the hotel’s kitchen will be hosting a “Baden-Württemberg Food Festival,” focusing on the cuisine of the southern German state of the same name. Here are a few of the more diverting menu items:
But if the porky tastes of south Germany don’t grab you don’t worry, because ever Thursday at 7:00 p.m. throughout the summer the back patio of the Bistro Jardin will be firing up an “Aussie Barbie.”
If you’ve never heard the expression, “Barbie” is Australian for “Bar-B-Que,” as opposed to “Sheila” which means “girl.” Though given the rather incredible selection of meats being charred – ostrich steaks, lamb chops, crocodile, barracuda, Tasmanian salmon, prawns, and at least three kinds of beef – we wouldn’t be surprised to find some well-marbled Melbourne Sheila rump steaks in the mix. Anyway, at just Ft 6,000 per person, you’d be a drongo not to go check it out.
And the food has nearly nothing to do with that beautiful region. “Rüggenwalder” liver suasages from are East Germany (and ruin the taste of good black forest ham by the way), Maultaschen should not be filled with meat only but spinach and “Bratwurst Brät” and one of the few things swabian kittchen is not known for is cheese. But as the chief is Austrian, no wonder.

Actually, I tasted some of the cheese, and it was very tasty. If this is not a good example of South German sajt, I’d really like to get my hands on some of the premium stuff. Must be great…
