Jumbo Heist Provides Vital Publicity for Hungarian Winemaker

Some rare international wine news just in from the Pheonix Business Journal that an underworld wannabe (at least judging by his nickname) known as János “Giovanni” Konc has been charged with stealing 737 cases of Tokaj wine from the Hungarian Wholesale Liquor Store in Pheonix. What is strange about the case is that this wine, from the Vivamus winery, is pretty obscure, even by Hungarian standards, which means it would be as easy for cops to track down as it is difficult for online shoppers. Our friends at leading wineblog “A Művelt Alkoholista” could only find this under-construction website and the brand is almost invisible to Google – even though the winemaker has won a host of awards, for its Aszú wines in particular. On the other hand, the wine might just be so good Giovanni wanted it all to himself.

  1. Farkas László says:

737 cases?! He had to have accomplices and likely it was an inside job. In the US, such valuable inventory is usually covered by cameras, making it harder to get away with the theft, and the product was easily traceable.
