While the government has changed laws pertaining to some drinks, that isn’t the case everywhere. Despite a ready market and demand for it, don’t expect to find bottled fröccs at a store near you anytime soon, index.hu reports. The culprit, according to some, is the excise tax on the product, which can range from Ft 94 to Ft 221 (€0.34 to €0.79) per bottle, Bálint Varga of the Varga Pincészet told the portal. No similar tax exists for bottles of pure wine. To circumvent this tax, the Szent Anna Borház tried to sell the product in two separate bottles sold together, but demand for this “loophole product” was non-existent. Péter Pólus of Királyital Kft. said he spoke with former EU tax commissioner and current Socialist MP László Kovács, who apparently agreed with Pólus, but nothing came of their meeting.
To see whether or not there was a future in this product, Hilltop produced higher-end fröccs in cans which they said sold well at festivals, but added they were reluctant to try selling it in stores nationally, where it would likely not see the same demand, and would also have to be sold for much less. All of this raises questions about Varga’s insistence that the product would do well, but Varga disagreed, adding that such products have been successful in other countries with similar drinking cultures as Hungary.
Varga added that he believes that the only reason the government has not shown any interest in removing these taxes is that they can’t be bothered to do so, which judging by the lack of response to repeated requests from index.hu for comment, very well might be the case.
You shouldn’t drink fröccs, it’s usually made with the cheapest wine available – much better to order/mix yourself half a liter of wine and half a liter of soda/ásvanyvíz …
Now that it’s so hot maybe use one liter of soda …
In fact, while we’re at it, let’s start selling pieces of toast that have been pre-buttered as well.
Seriously, how retarded do you need to be to want to buy pre-made spritzer when you can select the wine of your choice, the carbonated water of your choice (or simply get a soda stream) and then combine them in the ratio of your liking.
Well, why not? Put it into cans like canned beer, put some cool but not too difficult design on it, get a funny slogan, and sell it to tourists.
