In Search Of Lemon Refreshment

lemonade.jpgSickly and aggressive Coca-Cola products have squeezed most other soft drinks out of the market and mixed drinks are normally the reserve of cocktailistas, but sometimes nothing beats a refreshing glass of home-made lemonade. And if you are at home, it couldn't be easier to make, water, lemon juice and sugar are not the most elusive ingredients. So why isn't lemonade on every café menu in Budapest? This question has not only been troubling chew, but also food portal Deluxe.hu, which set off in search of Budapest's finest limonádé.

Cyrano

lemonade_cyrano.jpgCyrano, located at one of the most expensive neighborhoods of the city, offers lemonade in one-liter pitchers as well as glasses. Service was quick though the bill came late. The drink was bubbly and much more "orangey" than usual, both in color and taste. It was accompanied by a slice of lemon and lime as well as mint leaves. Deluxe.hu writes it tasted sweet rather than sour but was still refreshing. Price was Ft 1,560.

Ruszwurm

lemonade_ruszwurm.jpgOne of the most famous cukrászdas of the city, the nearly 200-year-old Ruszwurm, offers the classic lemonade: lemon juice with water, sugar and ice, and no fruit pieces or cocktail cherries divert attention from the drink. The café next to the Matthias Church lets the costumer choose how much sugar they want added to their lemonade and offers it in packets rather than putting it in the drink. The drink - not mentioned on the menu - cost a refreshing Ft 360.

Panoramia

lemonade_panoramia.jpgThis café, offering one of the most beautiful panoramas in the country, serves something called Rainforest/Dzsungel as lemonade. Quite different from the original recipe, but tastes good, consisting of lemon, lime, pieces of orange, cocktail cherries, mint leaves and a big portion of crushed ice. The drink is on the menu and costs Ft 1,180.

New York Café

lemonade_boscolo.jpgLemonade is not included in the menu but is available. It is similar to the basic recipe found in Ruszwurm, but more expensive (Ft 1,250), probably due to the luxurious surroundings. Service was extra quick, and the drink arrived flavored with lime and lemon. The lemonade was fairly sweet and contained a little ice, but no cocktail cherries, diced orange or mint leaves.

Noa Café

lemonade_noa.jpgThis café located near Nyugati pályaudvar serves a refreshing, sour but appropriately sweetened lemonade made of lemon, lime and ice. It cost Ft 750 and is accompanied by mint leaves. As it is not included in the menu, customers can choose the ingredients themselves.

Karma

lemonade_karma.jpgKarma's menu lists not one but three different lemonades named Original, Karma and Fresh Bitter. All cost Ft 600 and Deluxe.hu tested the second two. Both tasted sweet and contained orange juice with some lime and soda water added. It was accompanied by cocktail cherries but not lemon slices. The difference between the two was the grapefruit juice added to Fresh Bitter.

Café Miró Grande

lemonade_miro.jpgAlthough the Café Miró Grande menu does not include lemonade, it offers an orange-based, over-decorated cocktail similar to the original drink. It is not too sweet, contained cocktail cherries, lemon, lime and orange slices and ice but no mint leaves - and cost Ft 690.
