Just when you thought your culinary Hungarian was getting good enough for eating out or shopping in local markets without embarrassing yourself, along comes this shocker of a pic, which we snagged from local blog Subba. Apparently some heritage-minded greengrocer somewhere in downtown Budapest decided to liven up his store’s sign by spelling out “Vegetables-Fruit” in Hungarian runes (you can read more about these baffling scratchings here). What’s so hilarious about this is that, at least for many non-Hungarians, the phrase Zöldség-Gyümölcs is already a major linguistic headache. Our source also points out the irony of this appearing on a sign paid for by Coca-Cola. No doubt some enterprising restaurateurs in town are figuring out how to print “additional service charge” in rovásírás on their bills, so they can bamboozle tourists and locals alike.

Ah yes – this place is on the south side of Bakáts tér, near the bottom end of Ráday u.
