I'll Have a Kilo of… Oh, Never Mind

Just when you thought your culinary Hungarian was getting good enough for eating out or shopping in local markets without embarrassing yourself, along comes this shocker of a pic, which we snagged from local blog Subba. Apparently some heritage-minded greengrocer somewhere in downtown Budapest decided to liven up his store's sign by spelling out "Vegetables-Fruit" in Hungarian runes (you can read more about these baffling scratchings here). What's so hilarious about this is that, at least for many non-Hungarians, the phrase Zöldség-Gyümölcs is already a major linguistic headache. Our source also points out the irony of this appearing on a sign paid for by Coca-Cola. No doubt some enterprising restaurateurs in town are figuring out how to print "additional service charge" in rovásírás on their bills, so they can bamboozle tourists and locals alike.
