Regular readers will have already noted our ongoing fascination with the increasing ease with which one can find hitherto unavailable imported food luxuries in Hungary. So we'll just mention that, if you are a fan of extra-aged Gouda and other rare cheeses from Holland, there is actually a store dedicated to just that in Budapest: The Holland Sajtház (Dutch Cheese House), which sits a few meters down from the movie theater in the Duna Plaza shopping mall, a location that may explain the "Ratatouille"-like giant promotional rodent (below) they've put out to lure in local cheese-eaters.

It gets better, because not only does Budapest have its very own store devoted to Dutch cheese, according to the company's website, there are also outlets in Győr, Szeged and Tata, not counting the further locations they hope to franchise out. And since it seems unlikely at best that there is a store devoted to Hungarian food in Leeuwarden, Groningen or even Amsterdam, this may even suggest that gourmet imported food is now more mainstream in Hungary than in Holland.
