If the Bacteria Doesn't Kill You, the Bill Will

Over at Caboodle.hu we learn that Hungary's national medical authorities have launched an investigation into the hospitalization of 15 people, mostly foreigners, for food poisoning apparently contracted from food served at the Hungaroring race track during yesterday's Hungarian Grand Prix. For our part, we can happily report that we also ate at one of the trackside büfes and didn't get sick. But we still feel queasy just thinking about what we ate, and what we paid for it.
The above picture was taken at around 3:45 yesterday and shows the late lunch for two that we had just after the race concluded. It consisted of a slice of grilled turkey breast (left) and a small pork chop, each served with a slice of plain bread. Both pieces of meat were as dry and chewy as the average Formula 1 tire. Which is perhaps fitting, because they probably cost roughly the same as a set of ultra-hard slicks. With a pair of colas, our bill came to Ft 5,600 (€22.25).
So if you go to the track next year, you should probably pack your own lunch, or make sure to eat outside the confines of the Hungaroring, where we saw delicious-looking lángos (fried dough) for the very un-grand prix of Ft 300. On the other hand, paying so much to eat something so awful does make forking over €100 to stand in the sun watching cars go around in circles look like a bargain.
