French Hypermarket Offers Treat for Hungarian Nationalists

szekelyhet_cora.jpgLast month we jokingly suggested that the triumph of the Hungarian right in the 2010 general elections could have certain culinary repercussions. Maybe it's not a joke! Via eletforma.hu we learn that the French-owned Cora hypermarket chain is launching a "Székely kitchen" line of fifty products as part of a "Székely Weeks" promotion aimed at drawing attention to the culinary culture of the often-besieged Hungarian minority in the (now) Romanian territory of eastern Transylvania.

The hypermarket chain said that the aim is to market Székely products to its Hungarian customers here in Hungary, while also opening up the Hungarian grocery market to Székelys in their eastern Transylvanian homeland. Among the products for sale will be blueberry jam, cheeses, local sweets, syrups, organic honey and mineral waters. Also for sale will be handicrafts that can be used for cooking or decorative purposes. Either way, it's food for thought for any Hungarian nationalists who think foreign-owned hypermarkets are bad for the national table.
