Főzelék

Vegetable Stew

Tökfőzelék

Főzelék (“FEAU-ZE-LEK”) is a simple – and, in Hungary, very popular – vegetable stew which can be eaten by itself, with bread, scrambled or boiled eggs or meat. It is most often made from potatoes, beans, green peas, spinach, squash (tökfőzelék, above), sorrel or lentils. The latter, lencsefőzelék, is eaten on New Year’s Day, because it is believed to bring wealth in the coming year.
