Food Wars (I): Wholesalers Howl at Prices Demanded by Pig-Headed Hungarian Melon Farmers

As we predicted a few weeks back, this year's "cucumber season" seems destined to be full of unusual excitement, in the form of an ongoing battle between Hungarian farmers and their biggest customers over allegedly plunging prices for certain fruits. While the action earlier this month was over apples and sour cherries, according to state newswire MTI, the conflict is now focused on melon farmers in Southeast Hungary, who, egged on by a rabble-rousing Socialist parliamentarian, are now demanding a hefty Ft 30 per kilo of dinnye. For their part, wholesalers say such a price would paralyze the domestic melon trade, and make exports downright impossible, and would probably say even more if they knew what "melon farmer" means in English…
