Apologies for the light posting recently, but the bad food news causing a stink over the last couple of days has almost put us off our food altogether. The latest and most disturbing reports put the proportion of food sold “illegally” in Hungary at a stomach-turning 30%. According to Caboodle.hu, the National Association of Food Processors reckons Hungary’s product tracking system is out of order, which means that food can stay in circulation after it has gone off or without the necessary papers identifying its origin without anyone ever noticing.
It is not clear as yet whether these frightening figures come from black market trading, neglected paperwork or genuine evil (or what combination of all three), but one thing for certain is that a company called M.E.G.A Trade has played a big part in the mega outrage. The shifty company has been caught systematically collecting up expired goods, unpacking them and sticking on other labels to fool stores and consumers into buying them. But enough doom and gloom, now, what’s for dinner?
