Feketeleányka

Grape Varietal

Feketeleányka (“FE-KEH-TEH-LE-AAHN-KAH”) is an obscure red grape originating in Transylvania and better known by the Romanian name of Fetească Neagră. The Hungarian name, meaning “little black girl,” derives from the translation of Fetească Alba – the grape’s better known white cousin – as Királyleányka. Although the varietal remains rare in Hungary, it is considered one of the finest indigenous red grapes in Romania and Moldova, making it likely to catch on with Hungarian experimental winemakers.
