Fejes saláta (“FEY-ESH SHA-LATA”), called butterhead or Boston lettuce in the English-speaking world, is the most popular variety of lettuce in Hungary. It is said to be one of the oldest grown vegetables in the region and is today found in the gardens of many Hungarian homes. It is used in sandwiches or as a relatively plain side salad, dressed with a mixture of vinegar, water, salt and sugar.
Meanwhile, the word saláta itself is often used as a short form of fejes saláta, while also being a general term for “salad,” including both lettuce salads and savanyúság (pickled vegetables).
