We didn't get around to mentioning that last Friday was International Egg Day. But no mind, because in Hungary it is not only the second Friday of every October that the lowly tojás gets its day in the sun. In fact, according to various egg-related reports that came across our desk in the days leading up to IED, pretty much every day in Hungary is egg day.

Committee (Baromfi Terméktanács), Hungarians are world-leaders in the consumption of eggs, downing not fewer than 300 per head every year. Hungary's 13 million or so egg-laying hens squeeze out approximately 2.75 billion eggs every year, and major retail chains across the nation sell roughly 1.2 billion eggs each year, 20% of which are imported. Unfortunately, Földi says that the price of eggs is expected to increase in the coming months, and could potentially reach Ft 40 (€0.16) per piece at retail by the end of the year.

As for how are all these billions of eggs eaten in Hungary, here's one clue.
