A new decision in Brussels by the European Commission over who can use the “Tokaji” brand name aims to settle the longstanding dispute between Hungary and Slovakia. Although the vast majority of the Tokaj wine region is in Hungary, a small part of it lies in what is today Slovakia, and this has triggered debate between the two countries. Now, the commission looks set to adopt the Hungarian definition of what Tokaj wine is, which would mean that Slovakia could only brand some of their wines under the name “Tokaji” if the wine conformed to Hungarian specifications.
