As we’ve just proven, it doesn’t take much to justify a celebration over wine in Hungary. But this week Hungary’s Tokaj region has another reason to celebrate: according to a report in the Austrian press picked up by various media outlets in Hungary, an EU court has issued an “unappealable” (i.e. final) decision ruling that winemakers in Italy’s north will have to stop labeling their wines “Tocai” starting in April of next year. While the olaszok had argued that the name merely referred to the type of grape the wine is made from, the court sided with Hungary’s argument that the name suggested a region, and one which happens to be in Hungary. Now if only Ukraine was in the EU.
