Diaspora Food News (III): Hungarian Restaurant Celebrates Half-Century Killing Canadians

Our final look at the world of Hungarian food beyond our (current) borders involves the story of the 50h anniversary of the Budapest Restaurant, located in London, Canada, and run by the 75-year-old Marika Hayek (above). According to this article in the London Free Press, Hayek will celebrate the restaurant's golden anniversary with a three-day charity feast at a nearby cancer center that will include heaps of Hungarian food, and even a Gypsy band apparently flown in from Hungary. Heartwarming, no? Well, except for this:

Hayek, who has given to a lot of charities over the years, chose the cancer centre [for the event] because her husband and many of her customers have died of the disease.

The event is still two weeks away, so if you interested in attending, you can find out more details on the restaurant's wonderfully Borat-style website. And even if the tickets are currently all sold out, you can probably just show up. If the food is half as authentic as we think, they'll be at least a few cancellations due to heart attack or stroke. God bless.
