We're currently doing some long-overdue site maintenance that will likely involve some outages, including a temporary shut-down of our commenting functions. We'll hopefully be done within a few days. In the meantime, thanks for your patience and concern!

Csípős

Spicy

Csípős (“CHEE-PUSH”) is the most common way Hungarians say “spicy,” followed by erős, which literally means “strong.” But just as the Eskimos have 100 words for “snow,” Hungarians have several other ways of saying csípős, including pikáns or fűszeres, derived from the word for spice, fűszer. Additionally, people may casually refer to something spicy as paprikás even if the item is not deriving its csípősség (spiciness) from actual paprika.
