Countdown to Gluttonous Thursday Begins

It’s not normally our style to give advanced warning of culinary events, but “Gluttonous Thursday” requires early planning and swift execution. For those that don’t remember Torkos Csütörtök from last year and the year before, more than 500 700 1,000 restaurants offer a whopping 50% off all food and drink all day on a given Thursday every year. In 2008, the big day is February 7, which means that giant list of restaurants – and, for the first time this year, cake shops and MÁV dining carriages – will be published in a matter of days. As of yesterday, the event’s official site menjunkenni.hu is warning that the names, addresses and phone numbers of participating restaurants are currently being compiled by the folks at Magyar Turizmus and will be published right there on the site, leaving thousands of recession-starved Hungarians feverishly clicking refresh. You won’t beat ‘em unless you join ‘em.
