We're currently doing some long-overdue site maintenance that will likely involve some outages, including a temporary shut-down of our commenting functions. We'll hopefully be done within a few days. In the meantime, thanks for your patience and concern!

Citromfű

Lemon Balm

The fresh leaves of the citromfű (“TZIT-ROM FOO”) are used in Hungary in salads, fruit soups, dishes made from mushrooms, fish, poultry and wild game. It can also be used to add flavor to desserts made with vanilla pudding, túró or cheese. The plants are widely sold in hypermarkets.

Sometimes called méhfű (“bee grass”) or mézfű (“honey grass”), citromfű literally means “lemon grass,” but is not to be confused with the cane-like Asian grass of the same name, which is also increasingly available in Hungary.

For related information, see fűszer (spices) and fűszernövény (herbs).
