We’re breaking our pre-holiday break (don’t ask) to let you know that the now-annual “Great British Christmas Market” is now running at the Big Market Hall (Központi Vásárcsarnok) in Pest. Organized by the Kaledonia/Caledonia and the British Pantry, the sale includes lots of delicacies and other delights from the Brit-szigetek, and runs until tomorrow (Saturday) at 14:00. See you there!

Good for the expats! I’m seeing the Boddingtons!
It would take a well paid and adventerous Hungarian to try and experiment with some of this stuff, but for those who have the willingness and wherewithal, it’s worth it! What impresses me about a lot of British food products is how long some of them have been in business. Things like Bovril, HP and Lea & Perrins sauce go way back into the 19th century. Some of their beer makers have been at it since the 1700′s! Also interesting are the royal warrants on certain products (“By appointment to …”), certifying that a product has been considered suitable for the royal household, who certainly can afford to shop around for the best! Worth trying are any “Duchy Originals”, an organic, high quality producer backed by Prince Charles.
Hungarians in the food processing and beverage business ought to make a point of stopping by and sampling these products. They could get a sense of what the foreign competition has been up to, and maybe get ideas for their own product line!
