Hungarian Farmers Deny Claims of Widespread Pesticide Contamination

fruit-and-veg.jpgHungary’s Chamber of Agriculture has announced that both Hungarian and EU inspections have found Hungarian fruits and vegetables to be free of pesticides. This follows earlier publication of a “Pesticide Action Network Europe” (PAN) report by the Levegő Munkacsoport (“clean air working group”) which claimed that only 21% of the country’s fruits and veggies are pesticide-free, hvg.hu reports.

According to the chamber, Hungarian inspectors take more than 10,000 samples a year to be tested, which they argue revealed that PAN Europe’s findings where incorrect. The Chamber of Agriculture argued that since PAN Europe has not divulged details of how they reached their conclusions, it could be likely that the fruit and veg they purchased in Hungary was not actually grown in Hungary. Of course, we could just all eat organic if it wasn’t so expensive.

Here in Budapest, my food comes from the piac behind the Mamutt
and I feel very good about eating it. However, in the states I am
afraid of the food in the supermarket and have to buy organic. All
pretty tasteless anyway. Hungarian food, vegetables taste much
    better!
