Booze News (III): I'm Sándor, and I'll Be Your Bartender Tour Guide Today

Today's news about booze concludes with a quick peek at the Zwack Unicum Heritage Visitors Centre, which we recently toured with the guidance of none other than Sándor Zwack (above), one of the youngest members of the family that for more than a century has worked day and night, Dr.-Evil like, to make sure Hungary's "national drink" some day becomes the world's national drink.
We're not going to give away all the wonders of the museum - which is not to be confused with the other Zwack museum, out in Kecskemét - because then you might be tempted to not go and discover them yourself.

And go you must, even if you have no particular interest in Unicum, the triumphs and tragedies of the Zwack family, the "golden age" of Hungary in the late 19th century, or booze in general.

But for anyone who has an interest in any of the above, it's a cracking good time. Of course, to peruse the exhibits and hear the stories of Zwack lore directly from a Zwack is a special treat. Still, it's a thrill just to see all that booze history in one place.

And even the kids will get a kick out of what Sándor says is Europe's largest collection of miniature ("airplane") bottles, most of which was cobbled together by factory director "emeritus" Emil Gerencser.

And for those with a serious interest in spirits, it's like, well, Disneyland with a pocket full of "E" tickets.
Unfortunately, like Disneyland, we'd recommended you book by phone or Internet before showing up, especially if (as you should) you go with a group of people. Though unlike Disneyland, it only costs roughly €5 to get in, and the price of admission includes shots of Unicum and apricot pálinka, which is sometimes even poured by a genuine Prince Charming.
