In Hungarian, quince can be called either birs (“BEERSH”), birsalma (“BEERSH-ALMA”) if it is shaped like an apple (alma) or birskörte (“BEERSH-KUHR-TE”) when shaped like a pear (körte). Among other uses, it is made into jelly (birsalmasajt) or distilled into pálinka (fruit brandy).
