This book is subtitled ízes írások és régi receptek (“tasty writings and old recipes”). Gyula Krúdy (1878-1933) is one of Hungary’s most beloved writers and is best known for his Szindbád stories, which were published individually in magazines between 1911 and 1917. He was also known for his love of eating and drinking, and food and wine were frequently featured in his writings. This book is a collection of some of Krúdy’s writings on gastronomy, with a collection of 50 Krúdy family recipes. It was published by Krúdy’s daughter, Zsuzsa Krúdy, in 1983. In the introduction she mentions that one of Krúdy’s ancestors was an Italian chef who was brought to Hungary with Queen Beatrice, King Mátyás’ Italian wife, to cook for the royal family in the 15th century. Krúdy was a prolific writer, with more than 3,000 short stories to his credit. But few of his writings have been translated to English. Last year his novel Sunflower was re-released by the New York Review of Books.
