The ongoing outrage of the pollution drifting down the Rába from Austria spilled onto the supermarket shelves this week after a series of websites and chain e-mails urged Hungarian residents to boycott Austrian products. In particular, they targeted Austrian beer, which they say “foams like the Rába at Szentgotthárd,” writes fn.hu. Unfortunately, most of the “Austrian” Gössers and Kaisers sold in Hungary are brewed under license by the Dreher and Borsodi breweries and don’t come close to a genuine Stiegl tapped in the mountains of Salzburg. Hmmm, it must be something in the water.
