As if the Crazy Weather Wasn’t Bad Enough, It Now Means Less Wine

red-and-white.jpgDue to the erratic weather over the previous months, this year’s wine production is predicted to be 15 to 20 percent lower than usual, stop.hu reports. The start of the grape harvest season will also be delayed into the second half of August, and may take longer than usual. Hungary has over 70,000 hectares of vineyards and annually produces 350 million liters of wine, although experts predict that only 300 million liters will be produced this year. Bummer.

  1. david says:

The maths do not add up for me. That means an incredible 5000 liters per acre. I only get 600 for a half acre. Must be doing something wrong.

  2. Koermendi says:

Az a bor toek jo! Or, this wine made from pumpkins is excellent!

David, when the grape crop fails, OUTSOURCE.

  3. Zoltan says:

David, that should have read 70,000 hectares, which has now been fixed. If the math still doesn’t add up, blame stop.hu. This way it comes out to about 2000 liters per acre.

    What is even worse:

All my neighbours expect lower quality wine this year – many of them will resort again to adding sugar …

The one that I buy my wine from at least will use grape syrup, just like many Germans have to do.

  5. noobie says:

wolfi, as far as I know the adding of sugar is a
trend for more alcoholic wines. A perfectly good
wine can be made without adding sugar (assuming a
reasonable sugar level in the first place), it will
    just be lower in alcohol.

If this is wrong, can someone correct me?

  6. wolfi says:

noobie, AFAIK less alcohol also means less “substance” for a wine – here in Hungary some people (my neighbour told me that) even add water to the grapes – so quantity before quality …

Of course it should be the other way ’round …

    PS:

I tried many of my neighbours’ wines over the years – but some of them are just not drinkable. Now I know where and from whom to buy!

  7. wolfi,

Go to Sotheby’s, ask for a few bottles of Chateau Mouton Rothschild. Tell them I sent you.

  8. wolfi says:

Thanks, wino, but I prefer simple white dry wines – like the Chardonnay, which grows quite nicely here in Zala megye and is better than the Olászriszling …

PS: Of course if you have a source Chateau something at 300 HUF/bottle, I wouldn’t mind …

-The end of living and the beginning of survival-

it’s not only wine. A third of all arable land in Russia has recently been destroyed by fire, there have been severe droughts and floods in Pakistan and Nepal, droughts over huge areas of China, crop failures in the US, etc.

Climate change is partly responsible, and this is just the very beginning. Expect hikes of 30% in most basic commodities over the next short few years, plus major associated socio-political tension kicking off in the next decade or so over increasingly scare resources of all kinds, not just wine :)

Many reputable climate models suggest that much of Southern Europe will experience summer temperatures equivalent to modern-day Baghdad in the next 3 to 4 decades. Lemon and olive plantations, anyone?
