And Now for Something Completely British

brit-life.jpgLocal readers of the Britannic persuasion will probably already know this, but for everyone else here's the skinny: From tomorrow until Sunday, Budapest's landmark Központi Vásárcsarnok will play host to (what we assume is) the first annual Great British Christmas Market, which is being organized by the Kaledonia/Caledonia and the trade department of the UK embassy. Among the exhibitors in attendance are Belhaven beer, Dynamit Kft - which imports products from scourge of the salad-dodgers Jamie Oliver - and many others from the land where spotted Spotted Dick is hungrily consumed by both women and men, rather than being quarantined. In a similar vein, we were deflated to hear that local culinary heartthrob David Wilkinson will be in attendance, but will not be able to whip out even a centimeter of his legendary sausage, apparently due to some kind of obscure Hungarian health regulation. Still, you'll no doubt be able to arrange there to have David come to your house some other time, nudge nudge, wink wink, say no more.

Shame. David's tasty sausage had my wife in rapture
the other day. Highly recommended. And a damn sight
healthier than some of that stuff on sale in the
nagypiac.

I totally agree that them sausages are banned for health and safety reasons. Just seeing them in the market would remind me of my experience with them and I would probably throw up.

Make sure you try the Christmas Pudding muffin, very yummy!

Many thanks to all of you for supporting this event. To our stallholders for a sterling performance, expats for turning up in great numbers to get in some not-so-early Christmas shopping and to the likes of Caboodle for giving the event a plug. Here's to next year. Wilbur, we have plenty home made Christmas puddings for you at The Caledonia.

Well then I guess I need to visit again real soon.

Hello,
Im Adrian, the owner of English food shop, kft,Eger,
The only 100% imported uk food shop in hungary!!
I would of loved to have had a stall at the recent market, but patrick or greg dorey, never bothered to invite me!! We are open 7 days a week,Almagyar utca,7,eger,near the fortress!!
We sell all uk favourites like,hp sauce,heinz soups,baked beans,Roses,Robertsons marmalades,Hartleys jams,Gales lemon curd!!
Also, over 20 real cadburys choky, including caramel, twirl, wispa!!I even sell alcohol, strongbow, scrumpy jack, carling, john smiths, tetlys, boddingtons, pimms no1!!!I even sell corned beef, the ONLY place in hungary to buy most of these products!! For xmas,i got,mr kiplings mince pies, walkers xmas puds, cadburys selection box,and boxed choky, like heroes, roses, even,QUALITY STREET!!!also,Terrys choky orange!! Its amazing to see all the best quality food in my shop,so please come to eger, only 1.5hr from budapest, its worth it,Any queries, dont hesitate to call me,adrian=06.20.628.4282
All the best, merry christmas, see you all soon in eger!!!

AW

Nice plug for your company, only one thing wrong with it

WHY WHY WHY would anyone want to drive 1.5hrs to EGER to buy some brit foods when we can get it all easier in Budapest :P

good luck tho :)

Oh dear, there is 1 major thing wrong with your comment,"we can buy brit food in budapest"??
You CANT buy 90% of the 200 or so products that i sell!!
Example,REAL cadburys dairy milk caramel, not polish shit!!
A massive selection of cadburys choky,curly wurly,wispa,twirl,tasters!!!!
Massive selection of marmalades&jam!!
How about new arrivals like,Boddingtons,john smiths,tetlys bitters,also Strongbow,scrumpy jack,pimms no1,VERY sorry,but you cant buy these in budapest!!
The main problem is the old boys network in budapest, pubs ripping you off, making so called british food from hungarian ingredients!!
I sell only uk quality like, heinz,mc.vities, cadburys, hartleys, batchelors, for god ske i even sell princes corned beef!!!
1.5hrs,drive,dont make me laugh, you spend longer than that, stuck in bloody local budapest traffic!!
Its so sad,i dont understand why brits rea afraid to leave budapest!!There is life outside the capital,Eger is a beautiful place, quality local wine, and now quality food!!
So,why should you drive 1.5hr,just for cadburys choky alone, its worth it!!
keep dreaming my friend, cos the only way you will be able to buy all these products in budapest,is when i open a shop there!!!
Cheers!!

AW

i don't know you and have never met you, but i'm guessing you made a fatal error in your business plan, now having started the business in the corners of Eger you have discovered that there is not as big a demand on your products as you thought. . .yip you say that Budapest doesn't have 90% of your products, so if you knew this before you opened your shop why did you not open it in BP instead of Eger?? it is a well known FACT that the majority of expats live in a capital city and you could have competed head to head with the likes of Culinaris. I have lived here for a little time now and i'm aware of many places that i can by the products you have mentioned, so again why would i drive to Eger to get them when i know where to get them in BP and i dont have the petrol cost to get to you or the crappy 3hr return trip for a tin of heinz baked beans!

get over yourself! loser!!!!

Could anyone please ,tell us how to cook the Wilkensons sausages?
We bought a dosen and we already cooked some and we did not enjoy it at all:(
Maybe is a way to cook them or ...what?
Any clue would be appreciate.

Yep,you dont know me,and im glad you dont know me,cos you talk shit!!
Your the loser, living in overcrowded, polluted bpest!!
I lived there for 4 years,thats enough!!!
Get your facts straight, you idiot, culinaris sells international food at switzerland prices!! In other words they rip you off and its a shop for snobs!! If you bought 10 things in there shop, that would be your petrol money to eger!!
Again,LOSER,you cant buy the things i sell in budapest,so go away idiot, please dont leave budapest, your not welcome in eger!!!
By the way,i was right, you think the world revolves around budapest, for your information,Egerian people are fantastic, they are great customers,so you get over yourself and shut up,IDIOT!!!!!! MERRY CHRISTMAS from Beautiful Eger to all the sensible people in budapest!!!!

At least now we know that it's not just Budapest that turns people angry. But, when Adrian says "the main problem is the old boys network in Budapest" I am led to believe he knows what he is talking about. Ever ask yourself why - in big bad Budapest - you can't get more than a few brands of beer in a pub? And the brands, coincidentally, come from the same multi-national? Or, why there is not a single micro-brewery beer on offer outside of an occasional restaurant's home-brew?

@Carmen: ask Wilkenson himself! He is pretty accessible. I, for one, have had them baked, and also fried then put in red sauce over pasta.

Agree with you Matt about the beers, why does becketts sell gaymers old english at 1,350ft for a pint,CRAZY price!! It has to be the worst uk cider of all!!!
Im only angry with idiots, cos it costs a lot of money, and takes a lot of hard work to get uk food into corrupt hungary, and then idiots like him cant be bothered to drive 1.5hrs!!!!
if you want all the best uk beers thaen come to eger,i just got a special guiness,"Foreign Extra" its 7.5%,how mad is that!!!!!
Think i will stick with strongbow, still the best cider in the world!!!
All the best.

@Carmen. Why not take the hint from the food
safety people who did not let him sell the
sausages in the market? You can get all sorts of
horse meat and some dubious looking pork products
there but they banned the sausages for health
reasons. Best not give them to your pets either
until a veterinarian health and safety person
approves them for pets, let alone human
consumption. Wilkenson recommends baking them. So
what you do is (if you insist) is get up in the
morning and put your oven on at about 200 degrees
and when the oven is at the temperature (about 15
minutes) bake them for about 45 minutes(they are
very thick and pork needs a good cooking). Hey
presto, they are cooked. You are only on your
fifth cup of coffee and "breakfast" is ready.
Enjoy, I did not. BTW ask him exactly how much MSG
is in the product.

@Adrian,
You are the public face of your business and no
matter what anyone says to you, I strongly
recommend that you never, ever, ever, write or say
things like "you talk shit!! Your the loser".
Such an attitude is highly off-putting to any
potential customers and will lose you business.
Please think about how this appears to others. I
don't know anything about you but your comments
here make it look like you have quite a chip on
your shoulder about Budapest, quite probably well
founded, but this is certainly not a way to build
a business strategy. You will not attract
business and build a customer base with your
comments here. I'm sure you are sincere and I
know setting up a small business is hard hard
work. So I wish you luck. But you need to think
about how to attract business more effectively.

AW this extract from a letter written by you proves you got it wrong!

Dear Editor, My name is Adrian Windsor. I’m the owner of English Food Shop kft. 3300, Eger, Almagyar ut. 7. We opened on October 28th, but so far no expat Brits have come from Budapest!! I have advertised in Budapest at the pubs, embassy, etc!!

I’m sure you are aware of the costs involved in importing food from the UK, that’s why I need the support of the expats in Budapest!!

going head to head with culinaris makes perfect sense, you sell at cheaper than them and you get a better customer base, hmmm it is not rocket science!

@David/Carmen, I've eaten some of David W's
sausages and am prepared to give him the benefit
of the doubt on health regulations, because as in
most countries there are quite strict regulations
on product manufacture which are impossible to
attain by home-producers. Having said that, I was
slightly (only slightly) disappointed with the
results of baking the sausages I ate, perhaps
because they were a bit on the dry side, and may
try frying next time. On the other hand, it may be
that my experience is mostly with UK supermarket
sausages which tend to be pulped-up and
unnaturally juicy as a result. Of course I don't
know what's in David's sausages any more than you
do, but then the list of ingredients on
supermarket products isn't exactly inviting
either.

I googled the article referenced by Anonymous -
http://www.budapesttimes.hu/content/view/13606/210/

It's an amusing letter. Heinz baked beans and
Cadbury's chocolate - to take some quoted
examples... "great food"??? Well... Traditional
British food yes, but sorry these are not more than
that. Actually I like Cadburys a lot, but it is not
a high quality chocolate by the conventional
chocolate standards. Not to mention that traditional
British fare is much much worse than traditional Hungarian fare, regardless of the quality of what
one can buy in the supermarkets.

@Mr Benn,
Thanks for your comments, yes i agree with what you say!!
But,you know,i only originally left a comment here,to advertise my shop, guess what job is done!!!
Now ex.pats in budapest know that all your favourite food is available in 1 shop, you dont have to track it down,1 thing here and there!!!
But you feel like just giving up,when you finish laughing at the comments of andy capp!!!
@andy capp, thanks for the joke about cadburys!!
Not bad to be 1 of the richest companies!!!
Cadburys is MILK chocolate, made with REAL cows milk, from all the green grass from wet old uk!!!
Dairy milk caramel is the best in the world, thats a fact!!!
Hungarian home made food andy,is great,my ex.wife is hungarian,so i know, but hu supermarket food is awful, very poor, mainly tesco, due to the fact that it mainly comes from poland!!
Uk food is instant, quality, tastes as good as home made food, without cooking all day!!!
@anonymous,thanks for advertising my article, but culinaris is not my competition!! They sell international cuisine, wow, that word CUISINE,in other words, snobs food, like nice packaged chocolate for andy, costing 4000ft!!!!
Listen, english food is here in 1 shop, get all your food in 1 place, thats it!!!
Merry christmas to all.
All the best.
ENGLISH FOOD SHOP,3300,Eger,Almagyar Utca,7.
OPEN 7 days a week!!

@Adrian,

Man, you're shooting yourself in the foot here.

Sure it's nice for Cadbury's that they are a rich company... eh, but so is Tesco's and you clearly don't admire them for it. And while I like milk chocolate I don't fool myself about its quality - milk chocolate is sweet (i.e. dark) chocolate to which milk powder or condensed milk has been added. Do Cadbury's use milk that has been produced from Bio herds, free from antiboitics etc? Well, I haven't heard about it.

As for your comment "Uk food is instant, quality, tastes as good as home made food, without cooking all day!!!", words simply fail me.

Don't get me wrong, I wish you good fortune and will drop by if ever I visit Eger, but milk chocolate, crisps, beer, breakfast cereals, etc... eh, top quality healthy foods in general they are not, though certainly popular.

@Andy capp,
Im sorry andy, but sounds like you need to live on your own island, grow your own food, make your own chocolate!!!
You dont know what your talking about, tescos is a disgrace in hungary, they rip people off 150%,they are expensive and sel you beneath poor quality food!!Tesco, dont even know what the word quality means, tesco=GREED!!!!
Hungarian people deserve better, how about local produce,buy1get1 free offers!!
Tesco just uses hungary to take money back to uk and compete with morrisons, asda, sainsburys!!!
just cos you like cocoa based chocolate, fine, but please, get a reality check, cadburys is 100% quality product(UK CADBURYS),dairy milk wholenut,is full of real nuts!!
Sounds like you just dont like processed food, well thats your choice and good luck to you,but please, dont make silly comments about uk food quality, cos your wrong!!
Colmans mustard,hellmans mayonnaise,robertsons marmalade,quality,quality,quality!!!
I even got cadburys bournville dark chocolate, but im sure you will find fault with that too!!!
Please dont say anymore about uk food andy, you dont know what your talking about!!
All the best

Why not take the hint from the food
safety people who did not let him sell the
sausages in the market?

Sorry David. Not the case. Late in the day we were unable to provide the equipment necessary to store Wilkinsons sausages properly. We also wanted to organise cooking demonstrations, but again were unable to access the necessary equipment and permits in time.

@Patrick. Thank you for explaining the "some kind of obscure Hungarian health regulation". You mean a fridge. Do you not have them in Britain? I do recall getting my one and only batch of them sausages out of the boot of Mr. W's car on a sunny day and they had soured on the exposed surfaces. I noted then that he did not hear of the "obscure" fridge on that occasion either. How clever.

Dear All,
My name is David and I'm a co-owner of a company that according to Adrian doesn't exist. Any of the visitors to the recent market may have seen my non existent company The British Pantry. As well as selling the "quality quality quality products" that Adrian mentions we will even deliver it to your door free of charge, but Eger is still a beautiful city and worth a visit.
A couple of things I take exceptions to firstly don't claim to be the only 100% British company when you're not, don't knock people like Culinaris who have fantastic shops and are very good at what they do, and don't single out people like Declan (Becketts) who always offer a warm welcome and value for money.
Just a quick thank you to Mr. Dorey and staff at the British Embassy, and Patrick and Zsuzsi of the Caledonia for all their hard work in organising the British Christmas Market, and thank you to all the people who visited, we hope you had a good time, we certainly did!
I hope everybody has a great Christmas and for those of you who can't get to Eger we will be able to deliver to you between Christmas and New Year.

@David Hall,
Check your facts before you leave a message open to the public david!! firstly,i didnt pick on declan,i didny even mention his name!!! Ok,you think 1,350ft for the worst uk cider of all, gaymers,is value for money, fine,i dont!!!
Secondly,my claim to be the only 100% importer uk food shop is 100% true, correct me if im wrong but you dont even have a proper shop!!!!
So,i am the only uk food shop in hungary, fact!!!!
Thirdly,i only made a point that culinaris is no competition to me,as they sell international food not uk food, then i expressed my opinion, which im entitled to do!!!
Also, what a joke,mr greg dorey comments about the market,"its great to be able to show all the uk products on offer in hungary"????
Problem, when i was in contact with mr greg dorey beforehand, why the hell was i not invited???
Because,hungary=budapest,very sad but true!!!!
Listen david,i only went on here to advertise my shop,i did it,why, didnt you call me,instead of getting your facts wrong, then i would talk openly to you!!
See,im not interested in style,or image,i just want to sell great food to brits and hungarians, and offer an alternative to tescos, which is a disgrace!!!!
Our businesses are completly different ideas,i sell over 200 products,in a shop, your website and delivery!!!
Call me if you have any issues,ok,all the best,
By the way,your 100% right,Eger is a beautiful place,Merry christmas,and heres to a great 2010!!
Adrian.
English food shop,Eger,
open,26&27th dec.

Adrian, I still don't get it why you seem to
consider Tesco the competition. It's like comparing
a bistro to McDonalds. I wish you luck but wonder
about your business plan.

Whoa Adrian,

Why so aggressive ? I will not get into a slanging match with you.

You say you only advertised your business. Fine. But some of your claims are not really true.

My point is that it is possible to buy 100% British goods in Hungary from an English owned company other than yours and you dont have a 3 hour round trip to do so. A point I think you cannot argue with.

Please, have a good Christmas, and chill a little.

Adrian,

Not sure where you got the following quote from that you attribute to Mr Greg Dorey, HM Ambassador to Hungary.

"its great to be able to show all the uk products on offer in hungary"????

From his introduction in the event brochure he stated "I am delighted that we have this unique opportunity to promote Britain and a range of British products and services here in Hungary. We hope that many people will take the opportunity to visit the market and that we can also look at the potential to work closely with the Hungarian business community."

This was also the first event of its kind and I am sure we can all learn from this for next year.

@David,
Agreed,im not commenting on here anymore David!!
But,understand the aggression,my claims are correct!!
You dont have a shop,i wont do deliveries to budapest, cos you already do it,fine!!!
Maybe, thats how you can free deliveries, cos you dont have the huge expensive of a shop??
Good luck to you, selling from a garage is much cheaper option in hungary!!!
But,please believe me,you cant buy most of the things i sell in budapest!!! Until you stand in my shop, and see 200 products from uk,you have no concept!!
Ok,you can buy a Very, very, small selection of uk food in budapest,or a large selection of uk food in 1 shop,in Eger.ok!!!
Its totally different,to just having a box delivered,to actually go into an english food shop,a real home from home!!!
How,sad,we have invested into a shop, done all the hard work to bring the food 1,200 miles from uk,and you still go on about a 3hr return journey!!
i think i have every right to be angry, greg dorey should have informed me about the market, after all,he is the uk ambassador,i trade with uk,if my business does not do well, then the uk will suffer!!
Anyway, your right, enough said,i wish you all the best for 2010,hope its good for us both!!!
Cheers.
Adrian.
@Benny,
Tesco is the big problem in Hungary, they need competition, from a quality supermarket, then you will see them change there approach!!!
But unfortunatly, there so corrupt, there in the right country??
Merry christmas anyway,
Adrian.

@Patrick,
Sorry,i didnt quote word for word, but its the same what he said!!
The point is,im the only english food shop in hungary, and you, or greg dorey should have invited me to the market event!!
Why did you not even mention it to me???
I only found out cos somebody in bpest told me about it!!!!!
Its a bit of a farce, having an event showcasing, british products and services available in HUNGARY,without my food shop being there!!
At the end of the day,the choice is up to the ex.pats now, drive 1.5hr,once a month, stock up with all your favourites from home,or carry on getting a few small things from all over bpest,in this shop and that shop!!!
So,lets see what happens hey!!!
All the best, lets hope 2010 is a great year for hungary!!!!
Cheers.

AW

you are comical :) i call you the Liverpudlian lunatic :D :D :D

i think if you keep going on you would be aswell closing the shop because you have completely wrecked any corporate image you had or tried to have, i think your business plan is flawed and if you think with 200 products you can compete with tesco your a bigger fool than i had first thought!

but hey you wrote the plan, you must know who your target market is. . . hmmm expats. . . hmmm i see you have no expats coming to you. . . FAIL!!!!

have a nice christmas

@Anonymous=Patrick!!
Oh dear, hello patrick(anonymous),i knew it was you all along being two faced and nasty!!
Check through all my corespondance, where do i say where im from???
I didnt,so you blew your cover patrick!!!!
remember the nursery rhyme,"sticks and stones will break your bones, but names will never hurt me!!!!
Get a life, put your name on,dont be a coward hiding behind "Anonymous"!!
merry xmas!!!!

Adrian,

I always write as Patrick. Always have done always will do. I have no idea who Anonymous is. So please Adrian apologise for calling me two faced and nasty. There is absolutely no need for this. You might also recall some time ago, possibly 6 weeks or so, that I asked you for a price list, so that I could consider whether or not it would be worth be placing a bulk order with you. So far I have received nothing. So please Adrian, send the apology and the price list.

Patrick,
Ok,fine,i take that comment back, you have my apology!!
I agree, its all very silly on here now,so i will no longer comment on here!!
Patrick,we have had all sorts of problems with computer,i lost all addresses, please send me an e.mail, and i promise i will get you a price list sorted out,ok!!
i would like to meet "anonymous"(coward),whoever it is has a grudge against me,they know me,cos i never mentioned once where i was from!!!
Ok,patrick, your right, theres no need for my comment, again im sorry,no more comments on here from me,now, thats a promise!!!
All the best for 2010 patrick.
@Anonymous,
If you got a problem with me,coward, call me on 06.20.628.4282.
Or carry on wasting your time writing rubbish on here, either way, your a coward!!!!

AW

thats bad that you thought Patrick was me :( or i was Patrick. . . . how did i know you were from liverpool. . . . very easy! i read it on the internet, after all i am a troll, thats what i do :) troll the internet :)

see here is the part of the article i read

The owner is a very friendly English guy from Liverpool. He said that this shop in Eger is the only English import grocery in Hungary, and he plans to send shipments from Eger to Budapest for Brits living there.
The prices are a bit high, since everything is imported, but I hope the business will be successful and stay around for a while.
Here's their business card. If you're in Eger, stop in and support them.

This all looks like it has got quite nasty, just shows you what passions food can inspire!

David who ever you are? come to the place where I make the sausage, I will show you what goes into them, no msg, no preservatives, no colouring, just grade A pork and seasoning that I blend myself.

Unfortunately we could not sell at the market this year, as we would have had to build a mini butchers shop, fridge window, sinks and lots of other stuff. Easy I here you say, well I hope to be there next year.

Its not the same as selling packet goods, sausages that is! You want any tips on prep or just want to ask me questions go to www.wilkinsonsausage.webs.com its not hard to talk, but civilty has to be cultivated, just like a good sausage.

Happy Yultide to you all.

Ex-pat food fight!!!!

Now wasn't that all a wee bit silly, wasn't it.

BTW, thanks for reminding me why I hang out with Hungarians and not you lot. Still, I'm sure you're all nice people.
I personally think aiming for just the Brit ex-pat market is limiting yourselves. Why not cater for the French, Irish, Yank, Canuck, Dutch, Danish and Norwegian markets. All these countries have distinctive brandname products that are hard to get hold off here in Hungary.

Have a good New Year all, hope your businesses do well and congratulations for having the spirit and cohones to start them.

Fair enough Another Bleeding Brit. At least 38+ comments must get close to some sort of record for Caboodle. But a little unfair to refer to some of us as "you lot". Caboodle provides a forum and we share our views. I also 'hang out' with Hungarians and benefit from that. But it doesn't make me any better or worse than others.

And whilst I would agree that not all comments have been gracious, looking back on all recent post comments (3,2,0,0,2,1,2,3,....) at least we (And now for something completely British) have created a little stir in the passion of our Caboodle visitors.

My thoughts after reading this thread:

1) Why do we want owners of mom-and-pop stores to be just as buttoned-down and boring as the corporate machines. I'd like to have some more small business owner here who are fervent, possibly verging into nutty, about the quality of their offerings and actually unabashed to want our business.

2) Hungary doesn't have a lot of quality when it comes to their consumer goods. Heck even basics like bread and good-tasting fresh milk is hard to come by. (even Cserepes' fresh milk tastes like it came from quarry cows) I say that one must get the quality offerings, I don't care where they come from.

3) I'm beginning to think that Hungarian home-cooking is a mythology or at least overrated, otherwise there wouldn't be so many poor eateries kept in business here. (I exclude sütemények)

4) It takes less than 1.5 hours driving time to Eger for a large amount of drivers out there!

5) Keep on keeping on Patrick, Adrian, and David!

Now here's some quality british food:
http://www.spam.com/products/default.aspx

@Benny:

Are you sure this is fit for consumption by humans ?

Our dog would probably love it though ...

Fit for human consumption? Of course not. It
tastes like human flesh you know, at least, that's
why the pacific islanders love it.

@Benny:

Soylent Green! - I knew it ...

Back to British "food" : Have you ever tried "Steak and kidney pie" ? I had to eat it when I first visited England (Canterbury, for a language course) in 1965 - almost killed me ...

Also known as "Kate and Sidney pie". For good
reasons.

That should read "Snake and pygmy" Benny.

Hey Adrian,
Just a note and small comment. Why would I go down to Eger when I can get all British and original products from many places here in Budapest...such as British Store, Corner Center then heres this new one British Pantry and all of these they do home eliveries? Strongbow is also available if you dont prefer to choose from the huge selection of all ciders from Tescos in all over in Hungary? Maybe you should change your marketing strategy and try to focus on locals from Eger? Regards,

By the Way Adrian!
You dont have the right to call Gaymers cider "poor cider" ,you better take your words back and claim real things. You should give apologies for your comments otherwise as a foreigner and cider fan Im reporting you to the distributor staright away, who has the authority to sew you because of negative marketing and claimed untruth.

One more thing Adrian,

Dont wory for not being invited to that Xmas Market. Not everyone, especially not the major companies with British products were present there like your shop.EG Artosz, Corner Center,British Store, the distributor of great Gaymers ciders which is occuping almost all cider shelves in Tescos in Hungary,Becketts Bar and Restaurant,Guinness house as an Irish Bar, your shop etc and who knows who esle were all not present at that market. It didnt mean anything I guess....just all contacts....u know how Hungary and Hungarians work?:-)

Hello Audrey,
Two things your wrong about, check your facts please!!
1,STRONGBOW is the best selling and tasting cider in the world, thats a fact!! Also,i do have the right to say what i want about gaymers,it is avery poor cider,we live in a free country,im free to express my opinion!! By the way,im english, cider is our drink,i have been drinking cider for 24 years!!! Also,im sorry but i dont think you can get it in budapest, and definetly not for 500ft a can!!!
Not surprised tesco sells gaymers, just another awful product from the worst supermarket in the world!!!
2,Stop kidding yourself, that you can buy REAL uk food in budapest!!
Im so,so,happy that my shop is in Eger, its such a shame that people like you, think the world ends if you leave budapest!!!
You enjoy your gaymers, but please,it is a poor cider, and not very popular in the uk!!!!
Im sorry for leaving comments on here, its a waste of time,it seems that sensible people, like vladimir, who want quality products, are very few and far between!!
The old boys network and greedy big companies like tescos, will keep on ripping hungary off!!!
Thanks for your support, long live big companies like tescos, sell you awful food, cos most of it comes from poland,or wherever its cheaper!!!pay no tax,or rent, thats fair, isnt it!!!!!
All the best,
Byee.

Adrian,
It is now over 12 weeks since I asked you for your price list. Still nothing. It is all very well stating your point about the products you have and trying to persuade people to buy. I just want to see your price list.

You can choose from over 500 british imported products including, bacon, sausages and milk from our shop Ártosz in Csévi u.7b, Budapest. You can also purchase our products online and have them delivered to your door. www.artosz.hu
We also bake bread and cakes every morning and if you are feeling pekish pop in for a salad or sandwich with a coffee. David also stops off on his rounds at the shop, so order your sausages today and pick them up while you browse our shelves for something tasty.
Happy shopping

Hello Patrick,

Last time you asked for price list,i told you,i lost your e.mail address!!!
Better if you let me know what products your after, then i can give you a price!!
Anyway, where not set up for deliveries or card payment yet,so my point was you should come down here, train,or coach, and check it out for yourself!!!
We should be starting a website soon, but we really are asking,is it worth it??
So there is some shops in budapest, selling small uk foods, but i tell you what, they need to advertise more!!!!!
So,so, many people have been in our shop, from budapest, all hungarian, and none of them have heard of these shops!!!
Good luck to them all, they need it,just like us!!!
All the best,

Dear Nigel/Artosz,

You guys are awesome! I just checked your new website with the online shop and saw you have Reeses Peanut Butter cups! Yummie....whenever I feel like having one Im gonna order it from you guys!:-) your cakes look very delicious as well! Congrats on all your creative stuff with the great prices which are not as high as compared to others like Culinaris etc.

Adrian, there's only one way to say it - you are
most entertaining.

More seriously folks, does anyone know if it's
possible to get the american Mrs Fields cookies
anywhere in Budapest - or Europe for that matter?
Their website doesn't even list any franchises in
Europe. Failing that, where can I get great choc
chip cookies.

@small is beautiful,
Thats a very enternaining name!!!
More seriously,if you want to risk, falling off the edge of the world,oh my god, leave budapest, come to Eger!!!
Cos,we sell the best chocolate chip cookie in the world!!!
Maryland, double choc chip cookie, made by burtons biscuits in england!!
If you like biscuits,i sell all the best in the world, massive selection of mc vities, from digestives,or milk,or plain choky digestives, even got hob-nobs,&plain choky hob-nobs!! Also got cadburys oat&choky chip biscuits, fingers, choky digestives!!
Up to you my friend,i answered your question, the best cookies are in eger, see you soon????????
All the best!!!!
English Food shop,3300,Eger,Almagyar utca,7.

Adrain,

Just one small comment....I dont want to be to smart but You can get hob-nobs in almost all Tescos now even in Hungary.Go and check it! Its real man!

@Audrey,
Its not smart audrey, its just sad, very sad!!
We invested all our savings, take a risk, open a small business, and all you can do,is blow the trumpet for a greedy, shit shop like tescos!!
Anyway, again, your wrong,Yes,im sure you can get some in and around budapest, but not in tescos nationwide!!!
They just supply a bit more things to tease ex.pats around budapest, thats it!!!
But believe me,they dont sell 230 uk produts in any tescos in hungary!!!
Thank god, where in eger,we will make so much money from the massive tourist trade, because, its so,so,sad that people dont support small shops anymore!!
If people support us,we can keep prices reasonable,i can order upto 6000 products from uk,but you dont, you'd rather support a filthy shop like tescos!!
make sure next time you buy your hob-nobs from tescos, that there isnt a mouse already eating them!!!!
Again, thanks for your support,by the way,i had a strongbow last night, what an amazing cider!!!
Audrey, why dont you take a trip down to eger, its worth it,just for strongbow!!!
All the best,

One more thing Audrey,

Be very careful,if you buy any uk food from tescos,it probably has been on a tour of europe before it gets to budapest!!!!!
They import through suppliers, from all over europe,so god knows how long it has spent on the road!!!!
All my products, come from 1 supplier, direct from England!!!
Worth mentioning that,i think!!!
All the best,

@Small is beautiful:

My wife really enjoys the chocolate chip cookies from Aldi, she says they "almost" taste like the ones we had in the USA, so that may be the next best thing.

Adrian,
All I can say you are funny...nope you are ridiculous, sorry mate!:-))
Good luck for you on trying to figure out why Tesco and Wal Mart are the biggest and most successful companies in the world. Probably they know what people need and want and thats what they bring and not full shit loads of unnecessary stuff like others are just trying with and trying to stay on market.Regarding your business thinking and eneral your comments about everything I dont think you are an expat here in Hungary...if so then a really weird one!:-) God Bless you, your attitude and thinking! Expats are not here because of Eger, beleive me!

Adrian,
Sorry Im buying my Strongbow from other places like The British Store. They even deliver. I just ordered 2 whole cases last week thats nearly gone mate.

@Audrey,
Oh dear, are you friends with anonymous??
I rest my case, and i say a very final goodbye to this page!!
There has been some good comments on here, but then it has been hijacked by people like you and anonymous, who just throw personal insults!!
There is no need for it!!!
I hope your happy in your own cocoon of a planet,(BUDAPEST)its such a shame, there is 10 million people in hungary, only 2 million in budapest!!!
Thank god,im 1 of the 8 million lucky ones!!!
Dont set foot outside budapest, you might get scared??? SAD!!!!!
I did my job,AGAIN,only wanted to advertise my shop, like we say in england, any publicity is good publicity!!! But,enough is enough!!
All the best,

@Patrick,
1 more,"And Finally",as the two ronnies used to say!!
Just want to apologise again for saying what i said!!!
Im sure you'd agree with me,its a shame idiots like anonymous had his fun!!!
Thats the only thing i regret saying,i stand by everything else i said!!!
i've learned a lot since writing on this page, but thats it!!
All the best,

Adrian, please don't leave us. You are too much
fun.

You're right wolfi, Aldi's choc chip cookies are
really quite good.

I've found that Győri Édes "csokis ZABfalatok" are
almost the same as hob-nobs. Not such a catchy name,
but this is Hungary after all.

Bye-bye Adrian!
I love Aldis chocolate chips cookies too...they are really very similar like the ones you can get in the States...yummie

I've just checked out The British Store's website and can't see Strngbow advertised on there or maybe it's hiding somewhere other than in the "cider" section.

The exchanges on here have been most entertaining to read; to think anyone could get so excited about chocolate digestives or Ribena.

I understand and partially agree with criticisms of supermarkets in Hungary, but no British food store will ever be a suitable replacement for your local CBA and frankly, I can't think of one thing I would want to eat from the UK. Quality of UK processed food is off the scale bad. Everything tastes synthetic and has a paucity of real ingredients because the Brits seem to love these artificial flavours. Hungary has a rich cuisine and fabulous fresh ingredients are available if you know where to look.

@Londoner: Yeah, you said it!

I think it's less that Brits seem to "love artificial flavours" but more that that's what they're offered by the major food producers/retailers.

@OF: Not only in Britain, I heard from a friend in Germany that her kids did not like joghurt mixed with real fruit - they wanted the ready-mixed thing that contains mainly a lot of artificial flavor, they're so used to that, real fruit tastes lame in comparison ..

Poor kids!
