Affordable Lobster Luxuries (I): Did We Mention the Bisque at Kispipa?

lobster-luxury1.jpg

It’s no secret that seafood is either hard to come by in Budapest, or monstrously expensive. Double or triple that for lobster. So we figure any lobster dish being served locally is noteworthy, especially if it’s halfway decent, or at least affordable. The first of today’s low-cost lobster dishes comes courtesy of über-traditional District VII Kispipa Vendéglő, in the form of a lobster bisque.

So how is it? Well, not bad. We can’t really say how much actual lobster was in ours, because as with all proper bisques the crustaceans were puréed into oblivion. In fact, we can’t even say there was any lobster in it, because of the still-common confusion caused by the fact that the Hungarian word for lobster (rák) is the same as the one used to describe shrimp, crayfish, and pretty much anything else that lives in a shell in the water. Meanwhile, it was a little too orangey for our taste.

Still, for Ft 711 (€2.59; Kispipa is famous for its menu full of oddly specific prices) the outlandish presentation alone makes it a bargain. Or at least worth a solid Ft 712.
