50,000 Pálinka Fans Can’t Be Wrong

2009 Budapest Pálinka Festival to start this Thursday

Hard as it is to believe, it’s already that time of the year again. As in past years, the 2009 Budapesti Pálinka Fesztivál offers not only hundreds of types of fruit distillates, but live music and plenty of the sort of greasy carnival food you really need when you are gulping down 40°+ spirits in afternoon temperatures that can exceed 30°. The fun starts on Thursday and ends on Sunday, with mild hangovers expected to last until mid-June. Good luck. [Pic via.]

It’s illegal to smoke a harmless joint, but you’re encouraged to soak your liver in hard liquor. How profoundly stupid…

mmmmm…Palinka!!! I was there for the 2007 festival and really enjoyed it. If I was still living in Budapest I would definitely be there.

  3. Yo mama! says:

Anonymous, nobody is encouraging you to soak your liver in liquor.

    Can’t we do both? :)

    Erik,
I’m not agains palinka, I’m for equal opportunities.
Personally I don’t drink much since I reached legal age, what’s the fun in booze when you’re allowed to have it? I don’t smoke pot either, but I find it unacceptable that the state tells me what to smoke. Why turn an excellent cash crop into controlled substance? Hemp has so many uses, the ban is just silly.

Anyway, do they have some decent food vendors at these palinka fests? Good enough that it’s worth dodging drunken Hungarians for?
